The most common vehicles are Russian 4 × 4 (jeep UAZ 69, and its homonymous mini-van).
These vehicles do not pay much, but they are by far the most suitable for steppe trips: everywhere, all the crossed drivers, in addition to yours, know them perfectly and can lend a helping hand to the mechanics, and there is a network of spare parts throughout the country. The other side of the coin is that their engines heat up quickly (probably stops in too hot weather or on steep slopes), regular maintenance and more rustic comfort than a Land Cruiser.
For those who are afraid of being too “mistreated”, it is possible to travel in Japanese 4 × 4, more expensive but more comfortable.
Depending on the regions you visit and the time of year, you can travel by car:
Russian, for authenticity
Jeep UAZ for maximum 2 passengers + 1 guide + 1 driver
UAZ van for maximum 5 passengers + 1 guide + 1 driver
Intralink PDF Jeep Russian
Japanese, for comfort
Toyota Landcruiser or other 4 × 4 Japanese for maximum 2/3 travelers + 1 guide + 1 driver
Korean, for a bit of both!
Van 4 × 4 Delica Mitubishi for maximum 3/4 passengers + 1 guide + 1 driver)
Or by bus, for groups
Korean micro bus type Astana or Grace
10 seats for maximum 5/6 passengers + 1 guide + 1 driver
14 seats for maximum 8/9 passengers + 1 guide + 1 driver
Mini bus Asia or County
25 or 45 seats for a smaller number of passengers depending on the number of passengers and the volume of luggage.
Finally, note that it is difficult to travel “cheap” in Mongolia: because of the remoteness of your country of origin on the one hand and by the type of travel on the other hand: in 4 × 4, consuming 20L / 100km for loops an average of 2300 km in 15 days …

Or as much as possible, prefer the train to come, and, once there, the circuits without internal flight and non-motorized transport: trekking, horseback riding assisted by pack horses, camel trekking, mountain biking …
And good road!
